Fundraising Caps Doubled in Senate Race

Lynn Sweet has a lot of information in her blog about local fundraisers with many many big names coming to our state to raise funds for our high profile elections.  Interesting note about why ticket prices are so high to many of the senate race events,
"That Nov. 2 special election for Senate in Illinois--to fill the few weeks that will be left to President Obama's term, in addition to a vote for the full six year term also on Nov. 2-means that Giannoulias, the state treasurer and GOP rival Rep. Mark Kirk (D-Ill.) can fund-raise for both contests at the same time"

  1. Hi Lynn
I find that doubling the cap in the Senate Race is counter to the goals of democracy. The election process in Illinois is becoming more and more about the money and less about the issues. The more money being dumped into candidate's campaigns can very easily lead to special interests who are voiced by a powerful minority tend to trump the needs of the people of this great state. As we are one of the most corrupt state in the United States, I think that actually reducing the Fundraising Caps should really be the direction we head.

  2. When running for office three major parts play a factor into gathering supporters; money, social networking, and personal appeasement. With the cap doubled in the Senate Race, only one of these factors becomes important, creating an imbalanced system of personal following. I believe this is a bad move, when trying to bring the best leaders to Washington.
